Event at the European Parliament on the future of the Water Framework Directive
On 24 March 2026, Engineers Without Borders will organise, together with several European organisations, an event at the European Parliament in Brussels on the future of the Water Framework Directive (WFD).
The event will address the key role of this legislation, which for 25 years has been the cornerstone of water protection in the European Union, as well as the risks associated with its possible revision announced by the European Commission for 2026.
In a context marked by the climate crisis, ecosystem degradation and increasing water stress across Europe, the Water Framework Directive is a fundamental instrument to protect rivers and aquifers and safeguard public health. The discussion will also address the risk that, under the narrative of competitiveness and regulatory simplification, some of the environmental standards achieved over the past decades could be weakened.
The event will feature Sara Johansson (European Environmental Bureau), Cléo Moreno (ClientEarth) and Dante Maschio (Engineers Without Borders).
The event is co-organised with the European Water Movement, Aigua és Vida and EPSU, and hosted at the European Parliament by the political groups S&D and Greens/EFA.
